As I was writing last night’s post on an old laptop I use for travel, I spotted this video from 2014 on the desktop. I was a performing songwriter a decade ago, and even though I hadn’t sang for ages I recorded this cover to share with my online support group.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I picked up my guitar, but watching this made me smile.
I thought I’d post it here, imperfections and all, in case anyone needs a bit of encouragement today.

Hi Jean. I’m new to this sobriety thing – 6 days to be exact! I’ve been to as many AA meetings and I’m finding my way. I went looking for an on-line means of support and thankfully found you! I too sing and play guitar, and like you, haven’t picked up my baby (guitar) for months. It’s hard to play with a drink in the hand. I know I’m on a healthy path, and with the help of others and the Universe, I’ll get there. Peace!

Jean, thanks for sharing your beautiful voice! I love this song, and listened to it often in early sobriety, along with Hold On by Wilson Phillips, Walk Away by Tom Waits, and Fight Song by Rachel Platten.

Thank you for sharing this lovely video. Although you don’t perform any more, I can see that you use you creativity in many other ways. I used to be a creative person many many years ago. So long ago that I forgot who I really was. So I decided that 2018 is the year that I’ll remember, and explore my creativity like I used to. Can’t do that if alcohol is in my life.

As I watched your video, I thought, who knew (and in this case, who knew you were such a lovely singer?) And, then I thought there it is….that is recovery in a nutshell. When we are drinking there is so much others do not know about us because we are hiding behind the drink. And really, so much we don’t know about ourselves because we are hiding behind the drink. In a few weeks, I will be sober for a year and it has been the most honest and rich year in a very long time. Who knew!?!? Thank you, Jean!! You have been a tremendous help.
